GIF or MP4: what Pinterest actually stores, and which one you want

Pinterest does not keep your GIF as a GIF. On upload it transcodes the file into a silent looping MP4 and serves that to everyone. It still behaves like a GIF in the feed, but the file reaching your browser is video — so an MP4 is not a shortcut, it is the actual file Pinterest hosts. Which one, in one line

GIF has no motion compression, so a clip that is a few hundred KB as MP4 often lands at 2–6 MB as a GIF. Chat, email signature, forum post or slide → GIF, because it loops by itself. Editing timeline, Reel, or anywhere size matters → MP4. In doubt, take the MP4: you can convert it later, but you cannot recover colour a GIF threw away.

Why does my Pinterest GIF download as an MP4?

Because that is how Pinterest stores it. When a GIF is uploaded, Pinterest transcodes it to a silent looping MP4 to save bandwidth, and the original GIF is gone from their side. Why is the downloaded GIF bigger than the MP4?

GIF stores every frame as a separate image with its own 256-colour palette and no motion compression. MP4 stores only what changes between frames. The same animation is typically three to ten times larger as a GIF. If size matters, take the MP4.

Does Pinterest notify the creator when I download their GIF?

No. Pinterest sends no notification for downloads made through an external tool. The Pin owner sees no alert and nothing appears in their Pin analytics.

Can I download a GIF from a secret or private board?

No. LinkGrab only reaches content Pinterest serves publicly. Pins on secret boards, or visible only to invited collaborators, are not accessible to any external downloader. Move the Pin to a public board first, or ask the owner for a shareable link.

Will the downloaded GIF keep its sound?

The GIF format cannot carry audio at all, so sound is dropped by design. Most animated Pins are silent anyway. If the Pin does have audio you want to keep, download the MP4 instead.

Why did my Pin download as a still image?

Some Pins only look animated because of a moving cover image, or because the Pin links out to an animated page elsewhere. If the Pin does not actually move inside Pinterest, there is no animation data to extract.

The file plays but does not loop. How do I fix it?

That will be the MP4. MP4 loops only when the player repeats it, which chat apps and social feeds usually do automatically but desktop players like VLC and QuickTime do not unless you switch repeat on. Download the animated GIF version if you need looping baked into the file.

Do I need a Pinterest account to use the downloader?

No. You only need the public Pin URL. LinkGrab never asks for your Pinterest email, password or session, and you should never enter Pinterest credentials into any third party downloader.

Can I trim or reverse the GIF after saving?

The downloader saves the animation as published. Trimming, reversing and speed changes are edits you apply afterwards in any basic editor, and the MP4 version is considerably easier to edit than a GIF because most editors handle video far better.
