Pinterest Dark Mode: How to Turn It On

Pinterest does not have a dark mode button on iPhone or desktop. On those, you change your device or browser setting instead, and Pinterest follows it. On Android, check inside the app first, because there may be an App theme option there.

That is why you could not find it. Steps for each below.

The Quick Answer

  • Android: Pinterest app > profile > settings gear > Edit settings > App theme > Dark. No App theme option? Use your phone’s system dark theme.
  • iPhone or iPad: Settings app > Display & Brightness > Dark. Pinterest switches automatically.
  • Desktop: No official dark mode. Use a browser extension like Dark Reader, or turn on Chrome’s built-in dark mode flag.

Turn On Pinterest Dark Mode on Android

Two ways. Try the first, and if the option is not there, use the second.

Option 1: The In-App Setting

  1. Open the Pinterest app.
  2. Tap your profile picture in the bottom right.
  3. Tap the settings gear in the top right.
  4. Tap Edit settings.
  5. Tap App theme.
  6. Select Dark.

The app switches right away. If you do not see App theme in your version, skip to Option 2.

Option 2: Your Phone’s System Setting

This turns dark mode on across your whole phone, and Pinterest follows it.

  1. Open your phone’s Settings app.
  2. Tap Display.
  3. Turn on Dark theme.
  4. Open Pinterest.

The exact wording changes by phone. Samsung calls it Dark, Google Pixel calls it Dark theme, and some phones list it under Display and brightness. It is in the same place either way.

Running Android 9 or older? There is no proper dark theme. Turning on Battery Saver gets you a dark interface in most apps as a workaround.

Turn On Pinterest Dark Mode on iPhone and iPad

Pinterest has no dark mode setting inside the app on iOS. You change it on the phone.

  1. Open the Settings app on your iPhone or iPad.
  2. Tap Display & Brightness.
  3. Under Appearance, tap Dark.
  4. Open Pinterest.

The app is dark immediately. Everything else on your phone will be too, which is the tradeoff.

Want it to switch on its own each evening? On the same screen, turn on Automatic and set it to Sunset to Sunrise.

Turn On Pinterest Dark Mode on Desktop

Pinterest has no dark mode on its website. There is no setting to find, on any browser or operating system. You need a workaround.

Using a Browser Extension

The simplest option, and it works on Chrome, Firefox, and Edge.

  1. Go to your browser’s extension store.
  2. Search for Dark Reader and install it.
  3. Open pinterest.com.
  4. Click the extension icon and make sure it is On.

Dark Reader applies dark mode to almost every site, not just Pinterest. If you only want it on Pinterest, click the extension and use the site toggle to turn it off elsewhere.

Alternatives that do the same job: Turn Off the Lights and Night Eye.

Using Chrome’s Built-In Dark Mode Flag

No install needed, but it is an experimental Chrome feature.

  1. Type chrome://flags in the address bar and press Enter.
  2. Search for Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents.
  3. Change the dropdown to Enabled.
  4. Click Relaunch.

Chrome now applies dark mode to sites that do not offer their own, Pinterest included. Because it is experimental, some pages may look slightly off. Set it back to Default to undo it.

Why There Is No Dark Mode Button in Pinterest

Pinterest built its interface to follow your device rather than add its own switch. The thinking is that you set your phone once and every app matches, so there is nothing to manage per app.

It works fine until you go looking for the setting inside Pinterest and cannot find it. Now you know it is not there.

Pinterest Dark Mode Not Working? Try This

Turned it on and Pinterest is still white? Work down this list.

  1. Force close Pinterest and reopen it. The most common fix. The app often will not switch until it restarts.
  2. On Android, check App theme is not set to Light. If Pinterest has its own App theme setting and it is on Light, it overrides your system setting.
  3. Check the system setting actually saved. Go back into Display settings and confirm it is still on.
  4. Check for scheduled dark mode. If your phone is set to Automatic or Sunset to Sunrise, it only switches at certain times of day.
  5. Update the Pinterest app. Older versions handle theme changes badly.
  6. Restart your phone. Last resort, but it clears it up when nothing else does.

How to Turn Pinterest Dark Mode Off

Same paths, opposite choice.

  • Android: Pinterest > profile > settings gear > Edit settings > App theme > Light. Or turn off Dark theme in your phone’s Display settings.
  • iPhone: Settings > Display & Brightness > Light.
  • Desktop: Turn the extension off, or set the Chrome flag back to Default.
