GIF or MP4: what Pinterest actually stores, and which one you want

This trips people up constantly, so here it is plainly. Pinterest does not keep your GIF as a GIF. The moment an animated GIF is uploaded, Pinterest transcodes it into a silent, looping MP4 and serves that to every viewer. It still behaves like a GIF in the feed, but the file travelling to your browser is video.

A rough size guide before you choose

GIF has no motion compression. Every frame is stored as a separate image with its own 256-colour palette, while MP4 only stores what changed between frames. That difference is not subtle: a short clip that sits at a few hundred kilobytes as MP4 will often land somewhere between two and six megabytes as a GIF, and a longer or more detailed animation can be far heavier again.

Practical rule: if it is going into a chat window, an email signature, a forum post or a slide where it must loop by itself, take the GIF. If it is heading into an editing timeline, a Reel, or anywhere file size or colour fidelity matters, take the MP4. When in doubt, grab the MP4 — you can always convert it later, but you cannot recover the colour a GIF threw away.

Why does my Pinterest GIF download as an MP4?

Because that is how Pinterest stores it. When a GIF is uploaded, Pinterest transcodes it to a silent looping MP4 to save bandwidth, and the original GIF is gone from their side.
