Pinterest does not have dark mode on desktop. Its own help page says so directly: “At the moment, Dark mode is only available for iOS and Android devices.”
There is no setting to find, on any browser or any computer. But you can still get a dark Pinterest in under a minute using a browser extension or, if you cannot install anything, a built-in Chrome setting. Both methods are below.
Does Pinterest Have Dark Mode on Desktop?
No. Pinterest built dark mode for its mobile apps only. Windows, Mac, and Linux all get the same white interface, in every browser, on every plan, including business accounts.
Nothing you change inside Pinterest will alter this. The fix has to come from your browser.
Why Windows and Mac Dark Mode Does Not Work on Pinterest
Most people land here after turning on dark mode in Windows 11 or macOS and finding Pinterest still glowing white. That is expected behavior, not a bug.
When you switch your computer to dark mode, your system sends a signal to websites called prefers-color-scheme. Sites that support dark mode read that signal and switch themselves. Pinterest’s website does not read it, because there is no dark version to switch to.
So your system setting darkens your menus, your apps, and any site that supports it. Pinterest is simply not one of them. You need something that overrides the site itself, which is what the methods below do.
The Fastest Method: Dark Reader
Dark Reader is a free browser extension that generates a dark theme for almost any website, Pinterest included. It is the quickest option and the one most people should use.
Chrome, Edge and Firefox
- Open your browser’s extension store: Chrome Web Store, Edge Add-ons, or Firefox Add-ons.
- Search for Dark Reader.
- Click Add to Chrome (or Add to Edge / Add to Firefox), then confirm.
- Go to pinterest.com.
Pinterest turns dark straight away. If it does not, click the Dark Reader icon in your toolbar and make sure the toggle is On.
You can adjust brightness, contrast, and sepia from that same panel if the default looks too harsh.
Safari on Mac
Safari works differently and it is the one paid option.
- Open the Mac App Store.
- Search for Dark Reader for Safari and buy it. It costs around $5.
- Open Safari > Settings > Extensions.
- Check the box next to Dark Reader to enable it.
- Go to pinterest.com.
Not keen on paying? Install Chrome, Edge, or Firefox on your Mac and use the free version there. The extension is free on every browser except Safari.
Making It Pinterest-Only
By default Dark Reader darkens every site you visit. To limit it to Pinterest:
- Click the Dark Reader icon.
- Open the settings and switch the list mode to only enabled for listed sites.
- Add pinterest.com to the list.
Now every other site stays normal and only Pinterest goes dark.
No-Install Method: Chrome and Edge Dark Mode Flag
Cannot install extensions? Work laptops and school computers often block them. Chrome and Edge both have a hidden setting that does much the same job with nothing to add.
It is an experimental feature, so some pages may look slightly odd. It is easy to reverse.
Chrome
- Type chrome://flags in the address bar and press Enter.
- Search for Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents.
- Change the dropdown from Default to Enabled.
- Click Relaunch at the bottom.
Microsoft Edge
- Type edge://flags in the address bar and press Enter.
- Search for Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents.
- Set it to Enabled.
- Click Restart.
Once the browser reopens, Pinterest and other light-only sites will render dark.
Firefox and Safari have no equivalent. On those, an extension is the only option.
Pinterest-Specific Extensions
If you want Pinterest dark and nothing else touched, there are extensions built only for it. Search the Chrome Web Store or Firefox Add-ons for Pinterest Dark Mode or Pinterest Dark Theme.
They install the same way as Dark Reader and need no configuration. The tradeoff is that small single-site extensions get updated less often, so they sometimes break when Pinterest changes its layout. Dark Reader is the safer long-term choice.

For most people on a personal computer, Dark Reader in Chrome or Firefox is the answer. Takes thirty seconds and costs nothing.
Pinterest Dark Mode Not Working on Desktop?
Followed the steps and Pinterest is still white? Work down this list.
- Hard refresh the page. Press Ctrl + Shift + R on Windows or Cmd + Shift + R on Mac. Browsers often serve a cached version of the page.
- Check the extension is on for this site. Click the extension icon and confirm the toggle for pinterest.com is enabled, not just the extension overall.
- Confirm you relaunched. Flag changes do nothing until the browser fully restarts.
- Check for conflicting extensions. Running two theme extensions at once usually cancels both out. Disable all but one.
- Check you are not in a private window. Extensions are switched off in incognito and private browsing by default. You can allow them in your browser’s extension settings.
- Log in and reload. Pinterest sometimes serves a different layout to logged-out visitors that extensions handle less cleanly.
How to Turn It Off
- Dark Reader: Click the icon and switch it Off, or use the site toggle to disable it for Pinterest only. To remove it completely, right-click the icon and choose Remove.
- Chrome or Edge flag: Return to chrome://flags or edge://flags, set Auto Dark Mode for Web Contents back to Default, and relaunch.
- Pinterest-only extension: Remove it from your browser’s extensions page.
